Weekend Roundup: A golf ball blast and plenty of country crooning

Family activities abound this weekend with multiple sporting events, a special kind of airmail delivery and a couple venues that would make every cowboy long for home on the range.

Toeing the line

The soccer teams of Northwest Colorado have a busy weekend ahead as the Colorado Northwestern Community College men’s team begins its Scenic West Athletic Conference schedule with games Friday and Saturday against Salt Lake Community College at Loudy-Simpson Park.
Elsewhere, Moffat County High School’s boys team will also be kicking off Saturday against the Warriors of Grand Junction Central.
When: CNCC games at 3 p.m. Friday and 1 p.m. Saturday; MCHS game at 11 a.m. Saturday

Gridiron glory

The Moffat County High School football program looks to continue the momentum after last week’s win with another home game Friday night, bringing in the Steamboat Springs Sailors for the rivalry game between the two Yampa Valley schools.

Late-night film delight

Following the big game, Grand Futures Prevention Coalition and Bear River Young Life will host a movie screening as part of Fifth Quarter activities this school year.
The evening will include pizza and drinks.

Dropping the ball

The Yahoo Ball Drop and Golf Tournament takes place Saturday morning at Yampa Valley Golf Course.
A plane from Mountain Air Spray will unload hundreds of entered golf balls on the 18th fairway, with prizes going to registrants whose balls are closest to the marker. The tournament follows as golfers hit the links for 18 holes.
Proceeds benefit Boys & Girls Club of Craig and Craig Kiwanis Club. Golf balls and tournament space are limited.
When: Starts at 8:30 a.m. Saturday

Cost: Golf ball packages range from $10 to $100; tourney entry $130 per team

Firefighter fun

Craig Fire/Rescue invites community members for its inaugural Cornhole Tournament and Family Fun Day Saturday at the department’s training tower and Thunder Rolls Bowling Center.
Adults can compete in the tourney, with a payout of 50 percent of entries, and kids can enjoy the bowling alley’s lanes and bounce house.
Proceeds benefit the department’s scholarship fund.
When: Registration starts at 11:30 a.m., event at 1 p.m. Saturday

Cost: Tourney entry $40 per team, $15 for kids pack

Best of the west

Luttrell Barn Cultural Center hosts “A Western Music Cowboy Poetry Show” Saturday night with a full of country performers through International Western Music Association.
Among those taking the stage will be emcee Susie Knight, as well as Tom and Donna Hatton, Randy Hoyt, and Dennis Russell.
When: 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday

Doo-Wah hurrah

Craig Concert Association premieres its 2018-19 season starting with the Doo-Wah Riders in the Moffat County High School auditorium.
The country band had played together for decades, performing genre favorites with a Cajun flair. The group has taken the stage with a wide array of country singers, including Garth Brooks, Oak Ridge Boys, Dolly Parton, Faith Hill, John Denver, Glen Campbell and more.
Organizers are selling tickets for the full season as well as individual shows.
