Veterans Hotline: State VFW officers to host benefits meeting in Craig

Ed Wilkinson

Veterans of Foreign Wars state veterans service officers will be hosting a town hall meeting from 4 to 7 p.m. Nov. 15 at the VFW in Craig, 419 E. Victory Way.

All veterans are invited. The state officers will discuss veterans' benefits.

There will be a notice about this event in the Craig Daily Press at a later date.

Travel pay updates

Everyone collecting beneficiary travel pay will be required to provide proof of residency.

A copy of a utility bill (electric, telephone, gas, water, etc.) with a physical address listed (not a post office box) will be accepted as proof.

In the event that your living situation does not require a utility bill, a signed, witnessed, notarized letter may serve in place of a bill. Verifications will be required at a minimum of every six months.

Words of wisdom

Some advice for local veterans: take a copy of your dd 214 and have it recorded at the Moffat County Clerk and Recorder's Office.

If something happens to your records, or you pass on and family cannot find your military information, they will later have access to it.

Rifle winner

Richard Oberwitte won the Kimber rifle from the American Legion Post 62 raffle.

There will be another raffle after the first of the year.

Community service set

The American Legion Post 62 will conduct a highway cleanup at 10:30 a.m. Nov. 12. Volunteers will meet at the east end of Craig on U.S. Highway 40 near the railroad tracks.

Notice needed

If you need a ride to Grand Junction to go to the hospital, please give me as much notice as possible. Many times I have difficulty finding drivers on short notice.

Winter is coming on and many of the drivers go south, so my list dwindles.

I thank you in advance for this courtesy.

Also, if anyone wishes to volunteer to drive veterans to Grand Junction, come to my office and I will give you the paperwork to fill out.

All due respect

Veterans Day is Nov. 11.

It is not a pretty sight to see flags flying if they are worn or frayed.

Please replace them so anyone coming into Craig can see that we are proud of our country and our city.
