Veterans Hotline: New source for DD214s in Colorado

Bill Harding

The Colorado Division of Military & Veterans Affairs CDMVA sent all CVSO’s an email this week stating that the Division has DD-214s for many Colorado Veterans at their office in Denver. Their DD-214 files go back to 1980 and are filed by year of separation, then alphabetically. They say that if the vet’s mailing address, after separation, is Colorado they should have a copy on file. If your vet needs his/hers they can fax to the nearest CVSO office or we can mail copies directly to the vet.

Craig Telehealth Clinic Award

On Monday, Aug. 18, the Craig Telehealth clinic staff was awarded the American Legion Department of Colorado Caregiver of the Year award for its outstanding healthcare services to the veterans of NW Colorado assigned to the VAMC Grand Junction’s Emerald team. The recipients were Bart Taylor, Dave Newman and Robbie Fentress. American Legion Post No. 44 from Steamboat submitted the nomination, and members were among the representatives in attendance. The award was presented by Gar Williams the newly elected department commander, and his wife, Lu Ann, the incoming president-elect of the American legion auxiliary. Others in attendance were Mike Lausin, commander of the Sons of the Legion Post 62, Mel and Mary Shockley, commander and president of the Auxiliary for Post 62 in Craig and the Moffat County Veterans Service officer VSO. There was a great write-up in the Tuesday paper. See it for more details and the pictures.

Craig Telehealth Clinic Closure

The Craig Telehealth Clinic will not be open for medical appointments Sept. 2 to 5 for staffing issues. The VAMC Grand Junction has approved this closure and will be scheduling appointments accordingly. The clinic will reopen for services Sept. 8.

Flag of the Month

program

At the August VFW Post No. 4265 meeting, the membership voted to initiate a “Flag of the Month” program. The VFW is going to do similar to what the Craig Association of Realtors does with its “Yard of the Week” program. VFW members will drive around Craig and Moffat county looking at flag and other patriotic displays. They will photograph the sites, and then select a winner. The winner will receive the recognition for proper display of our national emblem.

New bingo winner

to get a ‘free lunch’

The VFW has established a new “menu” option to its Men’s Bingo sessions. At the start of each session, the first ball up the machine will be called and recorded. Then, if someone bingos on that number during the session and in any of the games that day, they will receive a gift certificate for a free meal at the VFW Steakhouse. There will be one winner each session, unless there are multiple winners with the same number in the same game. The first bingo with the number that day is the winner. So now there really is such a thing as a “free lunch.”

Navy Ships & Asbestos

Basically, any U.S. Navy vessel that was built prior to about 1960 probably had it (all of them). The massive use of asbestos, in ships, buildings and airplanes was stopped during the mid-1970s.

The following are two Web sites that include some ship information:

-asbestos.html.

These Web sites are operated by legal firms.

POW/MIA Recognition Day is Sept. 19
