Veterans Hotline: Grant money available to assist veterans

The Workforce Center has a small grant that is targeted for training assistance for a veteran, but also targets training for “green” jobs.

The preferred population is veterans who are recently separated and have served in a combat zone. But if you have a training plan and just need a little assistance, stop by the Workforce Center to discuss your plan and whether we can assist.

$17 million to assist homeless veterans

U.S. Secretary of Veterans Affairs Eric K. Shinseki announced 19 states, including the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico, will share more than $17 million in grants to community groups to create 1,155 beds for homeless veterans this year.

Denver VFW hosting fireworks show next month

Denver’s Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1 is hosting their eighth annual Veterans Day fireworks show at Denver Union Station on Nov. 7. This is a family event and includes free coffee/hot chocolate, hot dogs, giveaways from local merchants, music and displays of various military vehicles.

Oct. 4, 1957 – Sputnik is launched from Russia. “Sputnik” is the Russian word for satellite.

Oct. 5, 1947 – First televised presidential address from Harry S. Truman at the White House urging Americans to cut back on using grain to help starving Europeans.

Oct. 8, 1871 – The Chicago fire starts, and 200 to 300 people are killed and 17,450 buildings are destroyed, leaving 100,000 people homeless. O’Leary’s cow blamed for knocking over a lantern in a barn.

Craig Telehealth Clinic reminder

The Craig Community Telehealth Clinic offers U.S. veterans state-of-the-art technology as well as on-site nursing support and remote practitioner availability. The goal is to provide an extensive array of health care services to veterans in a setting that is both accessible and professional. To appropriately plan and coordinate your visit, access to the clinic is by appointment only. The clinic cannot handle emergency needs. Flu shot walk-ins are still ongoing for veterans currently enrolled in the VAMC Healthcare system. If you have any questions, call 824-6721.

Tele-psych services now available

Veterans can now get tele-pysch services at the Craig VA Telehealth clinic. All they need to do is call 970-263-2824 to set up a follow-up appointment for their mental health visit to be done there. If there are any questions, contact Jayne Scribner at VAMC Grand Junction via phone or e-mail
