Traveling basketball sign-up next week
The Craig Middle School basketball schedule limits teams from traveling beyond Northwest Colorado. The Craig Youth Basketball League picks up where that schedule leaves off.
“One thing we hope to achieve is making Craig to be able to compete with Eastern Slope teams,” boys AAU organizer Tom Dockstader said. “One thing that will help is for them to see better competition.”
Sign-up for the AAU season will be at 6 p.m. Monday at the Craig Intermediate School gymnasium. The sign-up also will include an informational meeting for parents of interested players. The meeting is for parents of boys and girls in fifth through eighth grades who would like an opportunity for some extra basketball. The cost is $35 an athlete.
The girls’ season will not start immediately, because the middle school season lasts through February.
The boys will start practice next will and will practice two times a week through April.
Dockstader said he hoped to set up games with area teams before the tournaments start in late February.
When the tournaments begin the teams will travel to Wyoming and the Front Range.
“They will see a lot of good competition,” Dockstader said.
Craig will host its own tournament, which is tentatively set for the second weekend in March. The third annual Bill Lawrence Classic traditionally includes teams from Wyoming, Utah and Colorado.
“It keeps kids busy in the winter and gives them more time on the court,” Dockstader said.
