Tourism in Craig about to hit the wall

Dan Olsen

— The upcoming visit to Craig by the Moving Wall, a replica of the Washington D.C. Vietnam Veterans Memorial that will take place Aug. 9 to Aug. 13 is expected to bring thousands of people to town based on past performances.

The Board of Directors of the Moffat County Tourism Association on Wednesday addressed a request from Chamber of Commerce Director Christina Currie for $5,000 for costs associated with advertising and promoting the event.

The tourism board is considering the request by the Chamber.

The wall is stopping in only two Colorado towns this year, with visits to Craig and Cripple Creek. The Memorial Hospital is sponsoring the stop in Craig.

The memorial wall visited Meeker some years ago, and it usually results in between 2,500 and 10,000 visitors at each stop.

Volunteers attend the wall around the clock keeping it open to the public at each stop during its national tour.

Signs are planned for the entrances to Craig announcing the wall, and directional signs will point the way to Loudy-Simpson Park for out-of-town visitors.

Posters are planned for local businesses and out of town veterans facilities to bring people to Craig to experience the memorial.

In other business, the board made plans to print more Browns Park brochures, which have been very popular with tourists this summer. Cedar Mountain maps also are in demand and may need reprinting.

The Moffat County Dining and Lodging Guide currently is being developed, with hours of operation and meals served being considered as additions to phone numbers and addresses.
