Three Springs wildfire contained in Moffat County

Five blazes ignite near Massadona

Less than a week after fire restrictions were rescinded on public lands in Moffat County at least five fires were sparked Monday near Massadona.

Massadona is located in western Moffat County about 20 miles east of Dinosaur.

The Three Springs fire, as the multiple fires were collectively named by the Northwest Colorado Fire Management Unit, was ignited off of U.S. Highway 40 near Massadona by sparks from a chain being dragged behind a vehicle.

Firefighters from the Moffat County Sheriff’s Office, Artesia Fire Protection District, Bureau of Land Management and Dinosaur National Monument responded to the scene.

A single engine air tanker also responded to the fire, dropping one load of fire retardant to slow the fire’s spread until engines and ground crews arrived on scene.

The fires claimed a total of 107 acres of BLM, state and a small portion of private land, according to a fire management unit release.

The largest of the five blazes was 85 acres, the release states.

All fires were reportedly contained at 8:30 p.m. Monday.

No structures were threatened and no injuries were reported, according to the release.

Two BLM engines returned to the site of the fire Tuesday to continue mop up operations.

Vegetation remains dry across much of Moffat County and the public is asked to exercise extreme caution when lighting outdoor fires, said Lynn Barclay, public information officer for the Northwest Colorado Fire Management Unit.

To report a wildland fire, call 911 or 826-5037.
