Thoughtful Parenting: Bilingualism becoming increasingly important

Erin Swanson/For Steamboat Today

Being bilingual is becoming increasingly more useful in our society. For that reason, it is important to continue learning and not lose the language skills that are already present. For example, a child who grew up speaking Spanish and learns English in school should continue to practice both languages with the goal of becoming bilingual and increasing his or her potential for numerous opportunities.

According to Ana Flores, founder of the education group SpanglishBaby, the top five reasons to raise bilingual children are:

• It is easier to learn another language from birth than it is during any other time in life.

• Multilingualism has been proven to help children develop superior reading and writing skills.

• Multilingual children also tend to have overall better analytical, social and academic skills than their monolingual peers.

• Knowing more than one language helps children feel at ease in different environments. It creates a natural flexibility and adaptability, and it increases the child’s self-esteem and self-confidence.

• Career prospects are multiplied many times over for people who know more than one language.

Here in Steamboat Springs, bilingual staff members are sought after due to the increasing need. Raising children to be bilingual is becoming increasingly more desirable. Numerous studies have shown that being bilingual increases lifetime earning power.

There are numerous other benefits to becoming bilingual, but it is important to focus on not putting priority on one language or the other. When children learn another language in school, they want to come home and tell their parents all about what they learned that day. This is normal and to be expected. Children are spending the majority of their time in school where English is spoken. Some students may wish to respond to questions in English rather than the language they initially grew up with.

Those who speak a language other than English at home should encourage their children to maintain that family language. According to Rita Rosenback, author and parenting blogger on multilinugalparenting.com, some ways to motivate children to speak your language if you are monolingual include:

• Make it a habit and consistently stick to speaking the language with your children,

• Come up with situations where your child will want to communicate with others in this language, such as play dates, Skype calls, sports and other activities,

• Make using the language fun with games, hobby groups or even computer games,

• Offer lots of encouragement and positive feedback,

• Be a great role model and show pride in your language, using it whenever you can. Read books and teach about the culture of your language, such as traditions, food, clothing, arts, sports, history, fashion and movies.

Also, three things to avoid:

• Refusing to talk to your children and only answering if addressed in the “right” language as this can be a very drastic approach,

• Pretending to not understand,

• Threatening with negative consequences.

A great way to learn together is to learn English or Spanish yourself and take advantage of Integrated Community’s opportunity to have a volunteer English teacher who will work around your schedule. On the other hand, you could practice your Spanish or French while volunteering to teach someone English in the community. Contact Erin at Integrated Community, 970-819-3720, to get started.

• Pretender a no entender
