The real disease could be fear

With the news that medical experts are investigating the deaths of three Wisconsin hunters to determine if chronic wasting disease has crossed from animals into humans, an immediate response might be to run out and get a bright orange Hazmat suit just in time for hunting season.

But we think now is not the time for residents of Northwestern Colorado to go overboard with fear but rather keep facts in perspective.

There has never been a documented case of a person contracting a brain-destroying illness from eating wild animals with chronic wasting disease.

And while the possibility is out there, what could be more damaging at this time is contracting the disease of fear.

We have had support from our county commissioners at the state and local levels, sincere effort and interest from those state officials who are working for us and the Division of Wildlife has done an incredible job of informing the public and being honest, even when it hasn’t been easy.

Let’s remember that hunting is what drives our economy in the fall months, and those same individuals who come here to hunt, come because they enjoy Northwest Colorado. Let’s continue to become more educated and more aware, but let’s also continue to positively encourage hunting tourism to our area visitors like it enough to come back year after year.
