The pros and cons of sponsorships

Have a Coke and a smile or a Pepsi and $25,000.

Such is the option before the Moffat County School District that has sparked a philosophical debate over the question of sponsorship.

Pepsi would pay the school district $25,000 up front if the school district agreed to only have Pepsi machines in the high school. A Pepsi banner would also adorn the front of the scorer’s table at Bulldog wrestling meets.

We think adding money to the athletic budget through sponsorships is a great idea. The cash on hand could be used buy better equipment, such as new wrestling mats, better uniforms, and could be used as a contingency fund in cases of emergencies, such as if the gym ever flooded.

Sponsorships should not mean the end of fund-raisers that not only can collect a significant amount of money but also cultivates a solid work ethic in student athletes.

These students also must be responsible for taking care of whatever new equipment or uniforms that might be purchased. And school officials must be responsible with whatever purchases are made through this new contingency fund, avoiding any frivolous expenses.

Moffat County does not have the benefit of having a huge booster club that other schools might have with tons of money to donate and a sponsorship might fill that gap.

School officials should define sponsorships on their terms but as long as sponsorships do not interfere with the spirit of the sports and the experiences that enhance the student athletes who participate in these activities, we think they will ultimately be good for the school district.
