The Clerk’s Corner: Prime information for primary elections

Lila Herod/For the Saturday Morning Press

The “Silly Season” is currently upon us despite the fact that it has already been a long, drawn-out election year! The 2016 presidential primary debates have consumed months and months of our televised news and entertainment. Many of us have witnessed chaotic caucuses, assemblies and petition processes, but the statewide primary election is finally here!

Colorado’s primary election will be June 28. Colorado is an all-mail ballot delivery state. Voters will receive their official ballots in the mail for all upcoming elections.

Important voter information:

• Active affiliated Democrats and Republicans will receive their ballot in the mail between June 6 and June 10.

• If you are unaffiliated, you must declare a party in order to vote. You will need to come to the Voter Service and Polling Center located at Moffat County Courthouse in order to receive your ballot.

• If you have moved since the last election you might need to update your address to ensure you get your ballot in the mail. Ballots are not forwarded, so we need your current address.

• If you don’t receive your ballot, contact the Election Department at 970-824-9120.

Sample ballots are available on Moffat County’s website: http://www.co.moffat.co.ushttp://www.co.moffat.co.us. Click the link for Elected Officials, then click on County Clerk & Recorder, and then click on Elections. For clarification, this is not a presidential primary, so only statewide and local candidates will appear on this ballot. The nominated candidates from each party’s primary ballot will be placed on the November general election ballot. The winner of the November general election will then hold office.. Voting is a privilege and should be taken seriously. Please exercise your right to vote in every election. Let your opinion be heard by following these simple steps:

  1. Make sure you get your ballot by checking your mailbox. Once your ballot is received, then vote!

  2. You can complete your ballot, at your convenience, by using any of the following methods:

• Mail your ballot, with proper postage and sign the affirmation on the return envelope. Return it as soon as possible.

• Drop off your mail ballot any time at the 24-hour drop box, which is located at the east entrance of the courthouse.

• Vote in person at the Voter Service and Polling Center located at Moffat County Courthouse between June 20 and June 28. You will need a valid form of ID to vote in person.

The Voter Service and Polling Center is open during regular business hours Monday through Friday 8:00 a.m. to 4:45 p.m. We will also be open June 25 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., and on Election Day 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Make sure that you vote early in order to avoid the lines on Election Day!
