Maybell students express gratitude toward soldier

Josh Nichols

Maybell Elementary School students are doing their part to show a soldier overseas that they are thinking about him.

Last week, the students wrote letters to Lance Cpl. Sean Keller, a Marine based in Kuwait.

In the letters, a few of the messages told Keller to “be brave” and “keep his head down,” and just about every letter read, “We’re proud of you.”

Teacher Bill Ronis, a Coast Guard Vietnam veteran, came up with the idea in a discussion with officers at the VFW in Craig.

Ronis said he has seen and experienced how important it is to receive a letter during mail call.

“It just feels good,” he said. “I wanted to do something because I know what it’s like.”

In addition to the letters, the students sent boxes of Girl Scout cookies.

“We sent him those because they will make him instantly popular for at least a few hours with the other soldiers,” he said.

Ronis said they had a classroom discussion about what they could include in the letters, but from there the students were on their own.

“I thought they were cute,” he said of the students’ letters.

When asking the students why they thought it was important to write the letters, Ronis said the students responded by saying they wanted to let the soldier know that

people at home are thinking about him.

The students haven’t received a reply yet, and Ronis said he was not sure if soldiers were even getting packages at this time.

But he said they hope to develop a consistent correspondence with the soldier.

It’s important to his students, he said.

“Even though they’re young, they know a lot about what’s going on and they’re scared,” he said.

What follows are the letters Ronis’ students wrote. The letters were typed in as written.
