Teach children that freedom is not free

To the Editor:

On Friday, Sept. 5, I read in the Craig Daily Press of a grieving family and community paying respects and bidding farewell to an American hero.

I was choked with emotion thinking about two little boys and a wife who will not get to see their daddy and husband again this side of Heaven. The words spoken by Mark Lawton’s friends and comrades of his courage, honor and commitment to family and duty shook me deeply.

It made me think, “What kind of legacy am I building for my kids and wife?” When pondering that question, I have to answer myself, “I can do much better.” Two very important values that I can live out and teach my children are:

  • Our way to God was paid for by Christ’s blood
  • Our freedom in this nation was paid for by the blood of patriots

Sept. 11 is Patriot Day and this free American is going to say a prayer of thanks for my freedom and for comfort for a grieving family.

To the family of Mark Lawton, Patriot, I say thank you, and my tribute to him is to remember to teach my kids that our freedom was not free. I think Mark would like that.
