Swim team loses to powerhouse Glenwood

Tom Schafer

The Moffat County High School girls swim team had their home opener against Glenwood Springs Saturday at the high school pool. Glenwood, which is known as a powerhouse among the Western Slope teams, swam hard and fast, defeating the Lady ‘Dogs 139-49.
“I think Glenwood is tougher than nails,” said head coach Ed Stehlin, . “We didn’t swim bad. They have a strong team.”
“It is difficult to swim against teams like Glenwood and Montrose because they practice in swim clubs year round,” he said.
The Lady ‘Dogs improved in a couple of areas. In the medley relay, the team shaved three and one-half seconds off their time, Stehlin said. Mirranda Hillewaert swam a great 50-meter freestyle and came within seventh-tenths of a second of breaking the state record.
“Seventh-tenths of a second, is a lot of time when swimming the 50 free.” Stehlin said. “Mirranda came in third place behind two Glenwood girls. One qualified for state, and the other came within two-tenth of a second of qualifying for state. We’re good swimmers.”
The swimmers are improving their times every week, their coach said.
“We had 32 personal-best times this week,” he added.
During practice this week, the team will work on conditioning, swim strokes and starting blocks, Stehlin said.
A few swimmers thought the team swam well even though it lost.
“Even though we didn’t win,” sophomore Kallie Murphy said. “We still swam good.”
“We swam good,” freshmen Chirsty Waine said. “I thought I could have swam better.”
