The 4th Grade Dictionary Project has been providing pocket dictionaries to fourth-graders in Northwestern Colorado since 1999. The project was started by a couple of mothers with the support of Colorado Northwestern Community College, local businesses, civic organizations and parent advisory committees. In May 2004, dictionaries were distributed in Craig, Yampa, Hayden, Meeker, Rangely, Maybell and Baggs, Wyo. Spanish dictionaries were presented to area students from Spanish-speaking homes, and additional English and Spanish dictionaries were presented for classroom use.

This year, our goal is to present pocket dictionaries to fourth-graders in Northwest Colorado and our neighbors in Baggs (a total of 350 dictionaries at $3.50 a dictionary). We think that awarding dictionaries to children to congratulate them for their academic efforts encourages them to continue educational pursuits and provides the students with a tool that can be used for many years. We put a label on the inside cover of the dictionary with an encouraging message to students and a list of our sponsors.

If you have helped make this project successful in the past, we thank you for your support. If you are interested in helping with the project this year, please call Mary Morris-Shearer at CNCC at 824-1135, Sue Syvertson at 824-3633, or Lois Wymore at 826-2904 so that your commitment can be logged (and we can determine whether additional sponsors are needed).
