Inside and out, Craig Middle School is taking shape.

Crews working under The Neenan Co., the Moffat County School District’s general contractor, are scheduled to finish structural steel installation in the building’s south wing by the end of next week.

External wall framing, which should be completed by the end of next month, is next on the general contractor’s list, said Doug Young, Neenan superintendent.

In addition to steel, another material is going up at the site: brick.

Veneer, or non-structural exterior, brickwork is finished at the sixth-grade pod, Young said, adding that the masonry on the outside of the administrative section should be completed by the end of next week.

Meanwhile, drywall is going up in the one-story, sixth-grade section in the wing’s southwest portion.

“It seems like it’s going quick,” District Construction Liaison Joel Sheridan said. “It seems like there’s a lot to do, but the changes are just daily and seem to be pretty significant. You walk in and see the different areas of the building starting to take form,” including classrooms, offices and the school’s media center.

A $29.5 million bond issue voters passed in November 2007 is funding construction of a new middle school and other campus upgrade projects around the district.

So far, Sheridan said, the project is on budget and on schedule, even though rainy weather recently set the project back a couple of days.

“That’s not bad (compared) to where we could be,” Young said. “We could have snow right now.”

Fortunately for the school district, the project’s schedule has a 10-day margin allowing specifically for bad weather.

And, thus far, the project hasn’t run into any significant setbacks.

“Overall, everything’s gone pretty well,” Young said.

East Elementary School

The picnic’s over for East Elementary School students.

Starting on Monday, they can begin using the school’s new cafeteria, which received a temporary certificate of occupancy Tuesday.

“(Workers) will be waxing the floor this weekend, so the kids can come in here on Monday and have their lunch, instead of being outside,” said Roy Schoen, Neenan assistant superintendent said.

The addition, which also is funded through the bond issue, is scheduled to receive a final certificate of occupancy after health department officials inspect and approve the facility.

“But we have a variance to use the kitchen (until then) as long as it is up to code,” he said.

However, new kitchen equipment must be installed and pass a re-inspection from state officials before the kitchen can be used.

Crews encountered a setback when kitchen equipment, including a stove worth about $10,000, was recently lost in shipping, Schoen said.

The equipment will be re-sent at no cost to the school district and should arrive next week.
