Steamboat Springs Middle School bus hit a deer Saturday

— A bus headed to Rangely for a Steamboat Springs Middle School girls basketball game hit a deer Saturday.

No one on the bus was hurt, according to the school district’s director of maintenance, operations and transportation Pascal Ginesta.

The driver called him after the crash, Ginesta said, and about 15 minutes later, he and a mechanic were on their way with another bus.

Because of where the crash occurred on Highway 40, the middle school team would not have been able to make its game in time and so the squad headed back to Steamboat on the second bus.

Ginesta said the bumper and fiberglass piece on the front of the bus would have to be replaced, but he did not yet have a cost estimate.
