Steamboat skier died after being trapped in snow

whose died at the Steamboat Ski Area suffocated to death after becoming trapped in deep snow.

Matthew Oscar Westley, 23, was found Sunday off Frying Pan trail. He had been reported missing by friends about 5 p.m. Saturday.

Routt County Coroner Doug Allen said Westley fell forward into deep snow while skiing and became covered and trapped. There was no trauma associated with the fall and no avalanche, Allen said.

The area had received between 24 and 32 inches of snow in the previous 24 hours.
