Steamboat police investigating death of 3-year-old boy
Steamboat Springs — A 3-year-old boy died Thursday in Steamboat Springs, and his mother was arrested on suspicion of misdemeanor child abuse.
Steamboat Springs Police Capt. Jerry Stabile said 24-year-old Meghan McKeon was arrested at about 6 p.m., and police still were in the early stages of the investigation.
At about 10 a.m. Thursday, police and Steamboat Springs Fire Rescue firefighters were dispatched to a report of a 3-year-old boy who was unconscious and not breathing. Police were told to respond to a bus stop near the Steamboat Campground on the west side of Steamboat along Lincoln Avenue, but no one was there.
The information was relayed to bus drivers, and firefighters learned that the child was at the Stock Bridge Transit Center.
Stabile said the child was pronounced dead shortly after arriving at Yampa Valley Medical Center.
Stabile said McKeon had been in Steamboat for several months and was living in a cabin at the campground. He said McKeon got onto a bus with her child after asking the bus driver if it went to YVMC.
Stabile said a relative of McKeon’s called 911 about the child.
“She (McKeon) didn’t call 911,” he said.
The name of the boy was not being released.
