Steamboat man suspected of sex assault

— A 37-year-old Steamboat Springs man is being held on suspicion of sexual assault.

The man was arrested Sunday, and his bond has been set at $20,000. As of early Wednesday afternoon, the Routt County District Attorney’s Office had not filed formal charges.

The man is being represented by the Routt County Public Defender’s Office.

Police began investigating the incident Friday after a Steamboat Springs Transit bus driver was told about a sexual assault. Later that day, police received a call from a woman who said her daughter’s friend had reported being sexually assaulted, according to an arrest affidavit. The victim did not initially want to report the incident to police.

Steamboat Springs Police Department officers were able to contact the victim, a 17-year-old female. Crying with her head in her hands, the teen told police “last night I fell asleep, then I wake up and this guy is on top of me,” the affidavit states.

The teen said she had been staying with the man because she had no other place to stay. The teen said she and the man had never been romantically involved.

After finding out about the incident, a friend took the teen somewhere else to stay.

The man was arrested on suspicion of a Class 3 felony. According to the affidavit, the crime is enhanced because “the victim is physically helpless, and the actor knows the victim is physically helpless and victim has not consented.”

Police believe the teen was sleeping at the beginning of the sex assault.
