Even as a science and math guy, Steamboat Springs High School junior Peter White has a philosophy any athlete should understand.

“If I’m going to go out for training and be there, why give it 50 percent?” White said. “Why go through the motions? You work hard and have the results pay off.”

Simple enough. And as White has navigated his junior year of playing soccer, skiing Alpine and Nordic and playing lacrosse, there isn’t a person who can say White ever took a practice or a game off.

For that reason combined with his work on the field, White is the Steamboat Male Athlete of the Year.

“The White way is you’re going to have a great time in your high school career, and you’re going to enjoy the sports you’re doing,” Steamboat soccer coach Rob Bohlmann said. “But when you step on the game field or practice field, there is only one way to play, and that’s 100 percent.”

White showed that throughout the year. On the soccer pitch, he was a creative player who was an all-conference selection.

But where he really separated himself was in skiing. White won the Skimeister, an award that recognizes a combination of top Alpine and Nordic results.

After finishing second his sophomore year, White made it a priority to win this year. It’s tough for the average person to understand the commitment. White would train three days per week with the Nordic team and two with the Alpine team, one of those days being double duty. He’d go to a race Friday, return home, then head to another Saturday.

“It’s just so great to have someone like that on your team,” Nordic coach Emily Lovett said. “He sets the bar in every sport he does.”

White couldn’t pick which sport is his favorite. He said that since he was a child, he’s always had to keep busy. His family didn’t have television when he grew up, so he instead found entertainment outside.

In his free time, he likes to be outdoors and has taken to backcountry skiing. White isn’t sure what he’ll do for college but said he wants to stay out West and possibly study computer science.

Regardless of what White does, there is little doubt that he will do it with full commitment.

“I don’t know. I like the beach, and I like the mountains,” he said. “Any place there is something to do. I can’t focus if I’m not active. Whatever it is — beach, mountains, longboarding — I’m game.”
