State returns money
2001 Great Colorado Payback list published
Believe it or not, the state might be looking for you to return your unclaimed property. That’s right, the government is making a list of unclaimed assets and the legal owners of that money and making an effort to return it to them. It’s possible they’re checking this list twice, but in a letter from State Treasurer Mike Coffman, there was no reference to any “naughty” or “nice” provisions for claiming property.
If you’re on the list, the money or property is yours. You just have to let the state know you want it. The largest individual claim to date is $225,000, so take the time to check the list.
This is the 14th year of the Great Colorado Payback program. In the past 13 years, the program has returned more than $100 million to more than 200,000 Coloradans. Last year, thousands of individuals claimed more than $6 million in lost property, according to Coffman. This year, a record $22 million worth of unclaimed assets belonging to nearly 45,000 individuals and organizations were reported to the State Treasury.
The unclaimed assets recovered in the Great Colorado Payback could be “lost” for a variety of reasons and the amount of money can vary. For Craig resident Jan Gerber, it was about $50 from an insurance claim that “somehow got bypassed and never got to me,” she said.
The Great Colorado Payback system found the oversight, marked Gerber’s name, and paid the money that was rightfully hers.
“It was a pleasant surprise,” Gerber said.
If you find your name on the list, or the name of a relative, call the Treasurer’s office at (303) 894-2443 or toll-free at (800) 825-2111.
