Name: Garrett Spears

Grade: Junior, Moffat County High School

Sport: Track and field, shot put and discus

How did you get your start in your sport?

“I started throwing in seventh grade because I couldn’t run. I was decent, but we didn’t really have much competition then.”

What is a strength that you have in your event?

“I have long arms that provide me with more leverage.”

In your sport, what would you like to improve on personally?

“I need to work on my speed at the front of the ring. If you can be fast at the front of the ring, you can really get your shot to sail.”

What is your favorite part of your sport?

“There is always room to improve. There are a lot better people out there than me and I enjoy that I know I can always work on something.”

What do you feel is the hardest part about your sport?

“Technique. Many people think throwing is all muscle, but if you try to muscle through, it won’t go that far. Technique involves concentration and balance.”

What is something about your team an outsider may not know?

“I think (throwers) have the most fun of any event. We goof off and have fun with stuff, but we can get things done as well.”
