Speaker Romanoff plans visit to Craig

One of the politicians at the center of debate about referendums C and D will be in Craig this weekend.

Colorado House Speaker Andrew Rom–anoff, D-Den–ver, will be at a public picnic scheduled for 3:30 p.m. today at Craig City Park.

Romanoff, one of the authors and chief supporters of C and D, also will be in Steamboat Springs this morning talking to the AFL-CIO.

Referendum C would allow lawmakers to keep more than $3 billion in tax revenues during the next five years that otherwise would be returned to taxpayers under the Taxpayers Bill of Rights.

Referendum D is a bond for capital investments. The bond would be paid off in part with 10 percent of the money from Referendum C. If Referendum C fails, so does D, but C can pass without D.

Craig City Councilman Terry Carwile invited Romanoff to Craig.

Carwile, who is also the chair——man of the Moffat County Democratic Party, said Romanoff probably will talk about referendums C and D, but that isn’t the only reason the house speaker will be in town.

“I thought it would be good to get him out and see what is going on in Craig, America,” Carwile said.

The picnic is not a campaign rally, Carwile said, but a chance for people to meet Romanoff.

The picnic is open to the public and is not partisan.

Carwile said Moffat County Commissioner Saed Tayyara, a Republican, and Ron Danner, the chairman of the Moffat County Republicans, have been invited.
