Sgt. Rick Holford: Proud to wear the badge

To the Editor:

On Feb. 5, I retired from the Moffat County Sheriff’s Office after 32 years. My entire career was spent here working for four different sheriffs. It was very difficult to say goodbye to what I consider the finest group of men and women I have ever known.

I include not just the employees of the Sheriff’s Office but the Craig Police Department, the Colorado State Patrol, the Colorado Division of Wildlife and Colorado State Parks, and I can’t leave out Craig Fire Rescue and the dispatchers who take care of all of us. These people dedicate themselves to the safety and welfare of the public, placing themselves in harm’s way and doing a job that is certainly not for everyone and is seldom appreciated.

Law enforcement officers (and firemen) represent a special breed of individuals unlike any others. While smart people run away from danger, these people run toward it, always knowing that they might not survive, like the officers and firemen at the World Trade Center. They are willing to give everything to keep the people safe.

While I began planning for this years ahead of time, actually leaving and realizing that I wouldn’t be seeing them on a daily basis was extremely difficult. It was the right time and I got to leave on my own terms. I worked in law enforcement nearly half of my lifetime and it became my second home.

Even though I won’t be wearing the badge anymore, I will always be connected to law enforcement. It makes me proud to have been associated with them. They are a great group and I will miss being one of them.
