School district seeking 1 new board member

The Moffat County Board of Education needs a new board member.

Board member Charity Neal had to resign earlier this month after she had to relocate.

"We lost our home to a fire in November. The rental property we had been living in that was in the district was sold," said Charity Neal about her recent move and resignation from the Moffat County Board of Education.

Citing a lack of rental options in Craig, Neal said her family had to relocate outside of the district she represented.

"She looked long and hard for a place to live in the district and could not find a place and so was required by statute to resign," said board President Darrell Camilletti, when he explained Neal's resignation and thanked her for her service at meeting on May 18.

Neal had served on the board of education as secretary, representing District 7, since her election in November of 2015.

A couple days before Thanksgiving 2016, a fire destroyed the Neal home,  at 1446 E. 11th St. in Craig.

While it may take time to find a permanent home, the family intends to stay in Craig and will remain active in the community.

"We still have three sons enrolled in the district, we have always been active as parents and we will continue to be active as much as we can," Neal said.

Neal hopes that the school district will receive many applications for her seat.

"There are some big decisions coming up for the board, and I hope people know that and want to be a part of the process and not just part of the aftermath," Neal said.

The new board member will serve from June 2017 until the next regular election in November.

People interested in filling the seat must live in, and would represent, District 7. District 7 is located between Colorado Street and Haughey Road and extends to 12th Street in the north and to the railroad tracks south of Stock Drive.

Applicants must not have been convicted of a sexual offense against a child, must be a registered voter and have been registered in Craig for the past 12 months.

People meeting these qualifications who wish to be considered must file a letter of intention with Secretary to the Board of Education Heather Higgins by 3 p.m. June 16 at the office of the Superintendent at 775 Yampa Ave. in Craig.

The board will interview prospective candidates during its regular 4 p.m. work session on June 22. The board is expected to select a new board member during its meeting that starts at 6:30 p.m. the same evening.
