School district, businesses score with new boards

The Moffat County School District will get three new scoreboards, and nine Craig businesses will get an unprecedented advertising opportunity based on an agreement the board of education approved Thursday night.

The businesses have offered to pay $21,600 to advertise on the school district’s three new scoreboards, and the school district will use that money to purchase the scoreboards. Two will go into the high school gymnasium, and the other will be placed at the football field.

The businesses ap–proa–ch-ed the school district with the offer, which the board accepted.

The contracts will be for three years. Those businesses will have the first opportunity to renew when their contract is up. The funds raised from the next sale of advertising will go into a capital improvement fund for sports-related purchases.

“What was nice about this offer is that we’ll have money every three years,” Athletics Director Jim Loughran said.

School board members spent little time discussing the merits of what seemed to be a win-win situation. What they were concerned about was whether the district should take advantage of this change to move the football field’s scoreboard to a more central location. It currently sits in the northwest corner of the field but would be more visible if it were due west.

“The last score board lasted 21 years, so I’d hate to see us put it in the wrong place,” board member Steve Hafey said.

Staff members will continue to evaluate the ease and cost of doing that. The new board should be up the first week of September.
