Scam alert: College athletics not actively seeking donations by phone

Craig Press staff report

CRAIG — Citizens in Northwest Colorado are urged to stay alert about a new scam.

Colorado Northwest Community College was alerted by a local business owner of a suspicious phone call from 812-301-7312.

“The caller is requesting donations on behalf of the CNCC athletic department,” CNCC Director of Marketing and Admissions Brian McKenzie wrote in an email. “At this time, the CNCC athletic department is not actively seeking donations.”

McKenzie requested that the Craig Chamber of Commerce alert its members.

In an email sent to members on Tuesday, chamber staff “urge businesses to evaluate all donations and contributions carefully, particularly those requesting donations over the phone. Never give credit card or banking information over the phone, and read all contracts carefully before signing.”

Residents are advised to contact local law enforcement agencies about any suspicious phone calls, text messages, mail, or emails that request access to bank accounts, credit cards or other personal identifying information.

The Craig Police Department can be reached at 970-824-8111.
