Sam Sterling:Saddened by behavior of hockey players

To the editor:

I was saddened and relieved after hearing of the debacle that unfolded in Eagle last weekend. Saddened because it reflects a trend in youth sports in general.

As a parent of two hockey players, I have fought the increased time commitment required by marginal A teams to C teams — commitments that 20 years ago would have been required of only Olympic hopefuls. Saddened because parents are the source of encouraging violent behavior and poor sportsmanship. Saddened because of an increase of coaches, who never played the game, condoning the dangerous actions. I’m 50 years old and have been playing competitive, recreational hockey for most of my life.

I look forward to playing hockey with my sons, yet I worry that someone might sprint full speed from across the rink to hit them from behind, causing a major injury or paralysis.

I am relieved that I held my son out of this tournament to enjoy a “family” Thanksgiving weekend.

Editor’s note: On Nov. 29, the Craig Cougar bantams were called for 17 penalties against tournament host Vail, and they lost 2-1 in the team’s third game. The loss set up a rematch with Vail in the championship game, but the hosts withdrew from the tournament, citing the Cougars’ conduct.
