S.V. Beckett: Craig

To the editor:
About county mineral interests: I have no problem with the county owning minerals. However, I do have a problem with the commissioners telling us that negotiating the leases is expensive.

They are paid, elected people. There is a natural resources person working full time. An attorney works full time. All of the people in the courthouse who handle records work full time. Negotiating a lease is just part of their jobs, it is not an extra expense to the county. They are not doing this every day of the year. Most leases are for between three and five years.

The school district has no obligation to take part in this, and I would question the legality if it did.

Sincerely,

S.V. Beckett
