Rural hospital provided better care than metro health center
To the Editor:
I’m not sure how you thank someone adequately for saving a life, much less when the care administered contains not only the highest level of professionalism, but compassion and kindness when it is most needed. So, I can only try to extend, with my deepest appreciation, an enormous THANK YOU to the entire staff of The Memorial Hospital of Craig and to doctors Reilly and Crowe of the Moffat Family Clinic for their recent care, which saved my husband’s life from a rare and deadly disease.
We now live in an urban area where the conventional wisdom would hold that we have access to a higher standard of care at the large regional medical center located here. Nothing could be further from the truth. I wish to urge everyone in Craig and its surrounding communities to give thanks (and support) to your outstanding local physicians and The Memorial Hospital.
You have doctors who will search out the truth and provide treatment with the urgency it deserves; nurses who see you as a person as well as a patient; administrators who insure that both facilities and staff are of the highest quality. Give thanks in knowing that they are there for you when you need them.
At our towering regional facility we find: nurses who would rather pay life flight to a hospital 100 miles away than risk local treatments; a small child who waits five hours in the emergency room to receive 19 stitches after getting mangled in a hedge trimmer; and many people willing to offer advice on which doctors not to see.
When you are ill unto dying, having a local facility that can offer quality care with feeling and friendship is priceless beyond measure. I urge you to appreciate what you are blessed to have, and to ensure through your support, that you will never have a loved one in a lonely facility, far from home, and surrounded by disinterested and hostile caregivers.
We give thanks every day that we were in Craig when we found ourselves in desperate, deadly need.
