Routt County deputy, patrol truck involved in rollover crash Sunday evening
STEAMBOAT SPRINGS — A Routt County Sheriff’s Office deputy received minor injuries after he was involved in a single-vehicle rollover crash while on duty.
At 5:05 p.m. Sunday, Steamboat Fire Rescue, Steamboat Springs Police and the Sheriff’s Office were called to a report of a Routt County patrol vehicle that had rolled over north of mile marker 4 on Routt County Road 129.
Routt County Deputy Travis Bedell, age 48, walked away from the crash with minor injuries. Routt County Undersheriff Doug Scherar said Bedell suffered a bump to the head.
Bedell was transported to UCHealth Yampa Valley Medical Center in Steamboat Springs to be checked out after the crash.
“He was wearing a seatbelt, and it saved his life,” said Colorado State Patrol Sgt. Scott Elliot. “It made all the difference in the world in this crash.”
Bedell was traveling northbound on C.R. 129, near the road’s intersection with C.R. 44A, when the truck began to rotate counterclockwise, Elliot said. The truck went off the left side of the road, struck trees and rolled onto its roof. No other vehicles were involved in the crash.
Scherar said the 2018 Dodge Ram was totaled.
“I think he’s incredibly lucky to be alive,” Elliot said. “The truck was demolished, and I’m really, really glad he’s OK.”
Elliot said State Patrol is investigating the cause of the crash and whether there is probable cause to believe traffic laws were violated.
“No determination has been made as to whether any traffic laws were broken, at this point,” he said.
“It’s fortunate that he’s OK, and nobody else was hurt,” Scherar said.
