Rodeo team heads to state

David Pressgrove

Nine members of the Moffat County High School rodeo team got up bright and early this morning and hitched up their trailers for a journey to the Larimer County Fairgrounds in Loveland for the Colorado State High School Rodeo Association’s State Finals Rodeo.

“This is the most performers that we’ve had go in sometime,” said first-year sponsor Dennette Webber. “This team has worked extremely hard and they deserve this opportunity.”

The check-in for each team is on Tuesday and the wranglin’ action kicks off Wednesday morning with the first of six rounds.

Two rounds will be held on each day through Friday.

After Friday, points will be tabulated and the top 15-point scores in each of the 10 events will move on to the “short go” on Saturday.

If a rider or roper places in the top four, they will qualify for the National High School Rodeo Final, which will be July 22-28, in Farmington, N.M.

The leading contenders for the team are Kelly White and Tia Brannan. White competed at nationals last year and is going into the state meet ranked fourth in pole bending and fifth in barrel racing.

Brannan will be competing in breakaway roping, goat tying and barrel racing.

She is ranked in the top 10 in the state in each of those events.

Other members of the team who qualified are Shalea Pinnt and Tyler Pinnt, Wyatt Pearce, Rebecca Runyan, Nikki Keen, Toni Webb, Kristen Webber and Chelsea Schnackenberg.
