Rodeo team faces tough competition

Elwood Shelton

The Moffat County High School rodeo team placed five times in Saturday and Sunday’s Henderson rodeo.

Once again the MCHS team placed sophomore Kelly White and freshman Tia Brannan in two events. Both girls have placed in every rodeo of the spring season.

White took a fourth place in Saturday’s barrel race and then fell to 10th in Sunday’s event. Brannan finished seventh in Saturday’s goat tying and followed with a fourth place in Sunday’s barrel race.

“The kids rode well at Henderson,” coach Danette Webber said. “The grounds were fast and the weather was good.”

Freshman Shamra Simpson was the third girl for the high school to place when she finished sixth in Saturday’s goat tying.

Webber said that many of the cowboys and cowgirls are riding their best times of the year at this point in the season, only to be edged out by the tight competition at the rodeos.

“There was only five-tenths of a second in between first and tenth place in Saturday’s pole race,” she said. “So it’s not that the kids aren’t riding well, it’s just the competition is that good.”
