A count on oil and natural gas rigs, as of Dec. 2, operating in Colorado, Wyoming and the U.S. overall, according to Baker Hughes, Inc., a Houston-based energy consulting company:

• Colorado has 77 rigs online — four less than Nov. 23, but 10 more than Dec. 3, 2010.

• Wyoming has 52 rigs online — the same as Nov. 23, and five more than Dec. 3, 2010.

• The U.S. has 1,993 rigs online — seven less than Nov. 23, but 280 more than Dec. 3, 2010.

Of those rigs:

— 1,931 are working on land, 20 in inland waters, and 42 offshore.

— 1,132 are drilling for oil, 856 for natural gas.

— 217 wells are directional, 1,156 are horizontal, and 620 are vertical.

As of the end of business Thursday:

• Crude oil closed at $98.39 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange.

• Colorado southeast crude oil closed at $85.75 a barrel.

• Colorado Western crude oil closed at $82.83 a barrel.

• Wyoming sweet crude oil closed at $83.08 a barrel.

• The national average price for natural gas closed at $3.38 per one thousand British thermal units or MMBtu.
