Richard. T Whitmore: Will he or won’t he run?

To the editor:

Re: The Ponikvar article (Business of politics: Auto-parts store owner can’t resist getting involved, Jan. 9). I have studied this article for several days, and I have to give my opinion of it.

One of the things that stands out is the Daily Press statement, “Ponikvar resigned from the board (library board), but he won the fight to have the director evaluated.”

Many responsible citizens declared that this would be a waste of library funds. He voted for it, and it was a waste of money. But let’s move on to the real issue here.

From my experience, this is a positional article. I have been involved in several campaigns, one of them Congressional. After receiving my World War II discharge, I was finally eligible to vote and follow my Indiana Republicans since then. That’s beside the point. The point is that potential candidates need to position themselves to run for office.

According to the Daily Press article, Ponikvar had no plans to run for office. However, the article states, “He said he doesn’t have plans to run for political office –t least for now.” So, the door is left open. Will it be family or politics?

We’ll see, won’t we?

Editor’s note: Businessman John Ponikvar did not solicit an article and reluctantly agreed to an interview with the Craig Daily Press. Ponikvar said he has no plans to run for office.
