Richard T. Whitmore: Clyde the elk should be allowed to live
To the editor:
In defense of Clyde, the elk.
Fact: A man was found dead in Clyde’s enclosure.
Fact: The man had instruction to not enter the enclosure.
Fact: No one witnessed how the man died.
Fact: Clyde has a gentle nature, and school children fed him “goodies.”
Comments: It will be assumed by the authorities that the man was gored by Clyde. Was Clyde provoked in some manner? Did anyone examine Clyde’s antlers for blood stains (the smoking-gun theory)? In full view of the facts, Clyde should be allowed to live.
