Returning champ wins Craig’s Cottonwood Classic

Tourney sees smaller turnout in 47th year

Keith Humerickhouse hits from the seventh hole tee box Saturday at Yampa Valley Golf Course during the second round of the Cottonwood Classic. Humerickhouse won the event, which is in its 47th year.

— Keith Humerickhouse clinched another Cottonwood Classic title Sunday afternoon.

The golfer from Eagle — who has won the three-day tournament at Yampa Valley Golf Course event on multiple occasions — followed up an even-par 72 on Friday with a 70 on Saturday, during the 47th playing of the Cottonwood.

Humerickhouse held a sizable lead going into the third day, though not as much as last year when he shot 67 in each of the first two rounds on the way to a win by 17 strokes. However, he and most of the other players were hindered by the windy conditions Sunday. Although he still came out on top, it was with a 76 for a final tally of 218.

After breaking even on the front nine, the back was treacherous for the overall winner, particularly the greens.

"When it gets windy out here, that's when this course gets really tough," Humerickhouse said. "I still love coming out here."

Jeb Savage received runner-up with a 223, notching a 1-under par 71 Saturday and a 1-over par 73 Sunday to bring him to second place following a 79 the first day.

Tying for third were Kyler Smith — 75, 77, 77 — and Parker King, both with a three-day total of 229.

King, who represented the Moffat County High School golf team at state in 2010, shot a 78 and a 76, rounding out Sunday with a 75.

"It got better, but I just made some mistakes," he said. "It was still fun. I think this is my fourth or fifth year."

Within the championship flight, for the net scores figuring in handicap, Doug Jones placed first with a 213 — 234 gross, followed by Doug Choate (215 net, 227 gross) and Andy Meach (224, 245). Those who win these honors are based on whichever score is higher for them.

Rich Woodley won both the overall Flight 1 and the seniors division Flight 1, with a score of 239.

Course pro Bob Mueller said he was pleased with the results for his first year with YVGC during the biggest tournament of the year, though attendance was down to 111 from last year's 130.

"It was kind of an off-year for us, but next year, we'll be able to make it bigger and better with more offerings," he said.
