Residents donate more to clerk
Community members contribute $25 more to Sullivan's cause
Some residents who support Moffat County Clerk Elaine Sullivan’s program to mail comment cards to Gov. Bill Ritter are willing to pay for it.
On Monday, four residents made donations to the Moffat County Clerk and Recorder’s Office totaling $20 in cash and $5 in stamps for any postage costs related to sending the cards to Denver.
Area resident Corrie Ponikvar also donated $10 last week.
The cards allow people to write a brief statement regarding increased vehicle registration fees, which the Legislature approved in March and became effective June 1.
Sullivan has described the fees as excessive, but stresses that her intent is to provide residents a direct line of communication to the governor.
Although some critics have said she is a Republican trying to take shots at a Democratic governor, Sullivan said she only wants to give the public a voice on an issue that directly affects almost all state voters.
Local donations came after a Denver Post staff editorial printed July 23 criticized the clerk for spending county funds on postage.
Sullivan said the first two batches of 25 comment cards cost 44 cents each to mail to the governor.
She has another 17 now – bringing the total up to about 67 – and has enough for postage to mail many more.
The cards have been something of a success, Sullivan said.
At least one person filled out a card Monday because he wanted to and did not have to renew his registration.
“I’m thinking now that people see I’m not trying to do anything illegal, I’m just trying to give people an opportunity to speak,” Sullivan said.
