The Moffat County Republican Central Committee does not plan to rest on its laurels for the Nov. 4 general election.

The group voted unanimously Thursday to contribute $1,000 to local and regional elections, using up two-thirds of its total bank account in the process.

Members said the presidential campaign was big enough and that their group should focus efforts on elections they can impact.

“I personally think that (Al White’s race for state senate) is our toughest in the district,” said Corrie Ponikvar, Precinct 1 Republican committee person.

The group voted to fund White’s campaign against Democratic candidate Ken Brenner, of Steamboat Springs, at a total of $500, or half the group’s total campaign contributions.

The race for 14th Judicial District Attorney also was seen as a key election.

“It’s really critical we get (Elizabeth Oldham) in there,” said Pam Foster, Precinct 12 Republican committee person. “I think she will have a tough go with all the democrats in Routt County now.”

Oldham, Republican candidate for district attorney out of Grand Lake, faces democratic candidate Tammy Stewart, of Steamboat Springs, in the Nov. 4 election.

The district attorney is a significant part of every community, Committee Chairman Ron Danner agreed.

Oldham “is a good candidate and I believe that position is one of the more important ones, locally,” Danner said.

The committee voted to give Oldham’s campaign $200, as well as another $200 to Randy Baumgardner, Republican candidate for state House District 57.

Baumgardner faces Democrat Todd Hagenbuch, of Phippsburg. Moffat County Commissioner Tom Gray also attended the meeting. He is running for reelection this year on his Republican platform against Democratic candidate Lois Wymore.

The committee approved a $100 allocation for Gray, who said he was fine with any amount of money he could receive. He plans to start campaigning soon and visit as many people as he can, both local organizations and residents.

Gray said he wanted to run to offer the community a steadfast Republican philosophy.

“I represent a choice for a government that is dedicated to the long-held conservative principles of limited government, private property rights, individual freedoms and fiscal responsibility,” Gray said. “That’s why I’m running. I want people to have that choice.”

Gray said he does not have any public appearances planned right now.
