Regional test coming for Moffat County wrestlers

— Moffat County High School's wrestling team heads to Parachute this weekend with high hopes for the postseason.

The Bulldogs will compete at the Colorado Class 3A Region 1 meet at Grand Valley High School. The meet serves as a qualifier for next week's state meet in Denver.

Moffat County will field 12 wrestlers in the 14 weight classes this weekend, and each wrestler will hope to qualify in the top four in their class to advance to the state meet.

It's do-or-die time for the Bulldogs, whose coaches say are in their best physical condition of the season. Coach Roman Gutierrez said he thinks the Bulldogs were as aggressive as they've been all season during a meet last weekend at Cedaredge. It's a trait that bodes well for success at the end of seasons.

"If they wrestle well, if they wrestle like they did last weekend, they should be in pretty good shape," Gutierrez said. "We wrestled really aggressively, and we lost matches, but we wrestled real well I thought."

The brackets are set for the double-elimination regional tournament, with many Moffat County wrestlers set to face off against familiar foes. Six of the Bulldogs will take on wrestlers from Cedaredge, who they beat 51-31 in their dual last week.

The other competition is teams from across the Western Slope, most of which Moffat County saw at times throughout the season. Regardless of the opponent, Gutierrez thinks the Bulldogs look as good as they have all season.

"We felt comfortable with where they're at," he said. "We had a couple of things Coach (Mark) Voloshin and I have been working with them at, just clearing up mistakes to help them out for this weekend. As far as their physical capabilities, they're ready."

Voloshin thinks several Bulldogs have the capability to advance out of the region. They have backed off the difficulty in practice this week, making sure to avoid injuries and stay fresh for what many hope will be a busy weekend.

"It does look good," Voloshin said. "A lot of it at this stage of the game is mental conditioning and mental toughness. The season's over and now it's a new beginning. Everything in the (regular) season is getting ready for these two weeks."
