Radio approval expected

Craig Fire Board members expect to sign off on some good news about the future of their emergency communications at a meeting tonight.

Government-supplied radios should fill the need to get the Craig Fire/Rescue up to date with the new 800-megahertz digital radio system. After years of worrying whether emergency agencies will be stuck with the bill of converting to a new digital radio system, board members may be relieved to sign off on an agreement that states the department is only responsible for maintenance for the radios.

“I don’t think it’s going to cost a penny,” said board member Byron Willems.

Eventually, all firefighters should be issued one of the new handheld radios.

Installation of the new radios should begin shortly, Willems said.

Advantages to the new system are that firefighters potentially could contact their leaders for direction in an emergency, even if they were out of state.

Board members also are exp-ected to approve a memorandum of understanding with Hay-den’s West Routt Fire Protection District.

The MOU is an update to the Craig’s firefighting policy. It states that firefighters from Craig Fire/Rescue can help its neighbor to the east for a determined amount of time at no charge.

The help is contingent on an expressed need for assistance.

Willems said the policy is being updated because the de-partment has a new chief.

He said it seemed like the issue easily would pass board approval.

“It seems like a no-brainer,” Willems said.
