STEAMBOAT SPRINGS — Sancy Shaw’s friends and neighbors are paying tribute to the impact she had on the North Routt community by adding purple light bulbs to the outsides of their homes in Willow Creek and surrounding areas.

“Purple was her favorite color,” said Willow Creek neighbor and good friend Stu Koci. “There are at least 200 purple light bulbs in North Routt, and it’s pretty neat to see.”

Shaw was killed on Interstate 70 near Genesee on Christmas Eve after being struck by another driver who crossed through the median. The family’s 6-year-old daughter Charlee was critically injured in the crash and remains in Children’s Hospital in Aurora.

Koci said the light bulbs are available at the Clark Store, but quantities are limited. Chris King, who manages the store, said community members who want to show their support can drop by the store and get bulbs, or they can find the purple light bulbs online.

“It’s just helping everybody kind of heal up here … it’s kind of a cathartic kind of thing,” King said.

The store will provide lights at no cost to community members who can’t afford them, but they have also been taking donations to support the family. The efforts have already raised $3,600 for the family at Yampa Valley Bank in Steamboat Springs.

“She was the one that always had a smile on her face,” Koci said of Shaw. “She greeted you with a warm hug, and she just always had time for everybody. I have thousands and thousands of memories that have gone through in my head, and I can’t tell you one bad memory that I have had with her.”

Koci’s family lives next door to the Shaws and shared special moments in the family’s life including the birth of three of their four children. When Shaw had to go to the hospital to give birth to her older children, Koci would come over to the house and take care of the other children.

“We loved doing it for them, and we love those kids like our own,” Koci said.

A celebration of life will be held for Shaw at 10 a.m. Friday, Jan. 11, at The Steamboat Grand. In addition to making donations to the Sancy Shaw Memorial Fund at Yampa Valley Bank, there is also a GoFundMe page at http://www.gofundme.com/4rvaz2-shaw-family for the Shaw Family. That fund has raised $132,267 to date.

“The lights are a display of love that Sancy had for others,” Sancy’s husband, Brett Shaw, said. “It’s nice to see the love and support that they (the community) has for Sancy and our family.”

Charlee is still at Children’s Hospital in Aurora where she is recovering from a traumatic brain injury and other injuries suffered in the crash. Brett Shaw said Tuesday his daughter is making amazing progress.
