Craig hockey team out shoots competition at Utah tournament

— Kandice Torno knew it was coming.

After letting a puck sneak through the five hole – hockey lingo for the patch of ice in between the goalie’s legs – for the game-tying goal in the third-place game of the Goal Digger Tournament in Park City, Utah, the Craig Puck Ewes goalie prepared for more of the same in an overtime shootout.

“I needed some redemption for that goal,” she said. “I knew they were going for the five hole.”

Although her redemption may have come by stopping a flurry of shots at the end of the third period to force the shoot-out, Torno wasn’t done.

She stopped all three shots, all attempts at breaching the five hole, from the Sun Valley 5 Stars, while her teammates, Jamie Eckroth, Tammy Strahan and Gayle Criswell, all found the net in their attempts.

“I knew we had the edge because their goalie looked pretty inexperienced,” she said.

The win resulted in a third-place finish in the B-Division of the four-division tournament hosted by the Utah Ice Vixens.

“We haven’t had a lot of luck in shootouts,” Criswell said. “So it was nice to see that we could do well in one.”

The 10-player Puck Ewes played four games in the tournament, losing Friday night 3-1 against the same 5 Stars, rebounding for a 3-1 win against the tournament hosts Saturday afternoon, and then they were shut out by eventual runner-up, Park City, 0-2 Saturday night.

The Puck Ewes’ 1-2 record was good enough in pool play to get into the medal round for a rematch against Sun Valley.

While Criswell thought the shootout win was the team’s best performance, Torno was pleased with the 3-1 win against the Ice Vixens.

Eckroth scored twice, and Shannon Young found the net once for the team’s two-goal win.

“I think we are starting to find our rhythm,” said Criswell about the 3-3-1 Puck Ewes.

Next up for the women’s team is an 8:45 p.m. showdown against the Steamboat Spring Edge at Loudy-Simpson Ice Arena.

“We borrowed a player from the Edge for the (Goal Digger) tournament,” Torno said. “It should be fun because we know a lot of the ladies on the team.”
