Prather’s Pick: One cool book
“Cool” is the word that best describes this week’s book for kids. (I think anyone who enjoys sports will enjoy reading the book.) It’s the “Sports Illustrated Kids all New Access: Your Behind-the-Scenes Pass to the Coolest Things in Sports,” published by Time Home Entertainment, Inc. (2014).
A cut-out door on the front cover of the book invites the reader to take a peek inside. What the reader finds, on the inside cover pages, is the Seattle Mariners’ luxury clubhouse where white and teal jerseys, navy shirts, helmets and shoes are all lined up. It’s just a hint as to what this behind-the-scenes book has to offer.
The book is divided into three sections: Athletes, Places and Gear. In the “Athletes” section, the reader gets to go behind the scenes with athletes such as Cam Newton (Carolina Panthers quarterback), Joe Johnson (Brooklyn Nets guard), Tony Parker (San Antonio Spurs point guard), Mikaela Shiffrin (alpine skier), Stephen Curry (NBA guard), and more!
The book has plastic lift-and-look pages. For example, a plastic page of Mikaela Shiffrin lifts to a drawing of her body in the same position, with muscles, brain, and other organs highlighted in color and accompanying information about how she “fuels up,” maintains mind control, and builds muscles. And there’s plenty more.
A particularly fascinating set of pages gives the reader information as to how Lego Master Builder Eric Varszeg designed a bust of Cam Newton, using 24,360 Lego bricks! A plastic page with a drawing of the bust opens up to a photo of the athlete, plus small photos of the bust assembly process, and lots more information about how the design was achieved and the bust was completed. It’s neat!
In the “Places” section of the book, the reader gets a look inside the MLB Fan Cave in New York, New York, featuring a wall of fifteen 46-inch HD televisions that show every MLB game that’s being played; a wall of more than 600 Rawlings baseballs (signed by athletes); Nonopus, a big orange octopus; and that’s just a start.
The Denver Broncos are featured in “Super Bowl Confidential,” several pages devoted to behind-the-scenes look at preparation for the Bronco/Seahawks Super Bowl Game.
Pages are also devoted to the Bigfoot 4×4 Garage in Hazelwood, Missouri where monster trucks are built. By lifting a plastic page, the reader gets to look under the hood of a Bigfoot Truck.
Protective gear, sneaker looks and stats, the Stanley Cup, and artifacts in the Baseball Hall of Fame can be found in the “Gears” part of the book. An especially interesting section covers the way footballs are made.
To repeat, this is one “cool” book that’s guaranteed to be a hit with both athletes and readers who aren’t athletes. You can find it in the children’s room at the Moffat County Library or can purchase it for $19.95.

It wouldn’t be a league event for Moffat County High School track and field athletes without bringing home some hardware, and the Bulldogs earned some metal last weekend.
