Piecemakers Quilt Guild, Ladies Golf Association raise $1,266 to fight cancer
The Yampa Valley Ladies Golf Association and the Yampa Valley Piecemakers Quilt Guild have teamed up to raise $1,266 this year for the Moffat County Cancer Society.
Lorrae Moon, Piecemakers board president, said the group began working on the quilt in the middle of last year and donated it to the Ladies Golf Association in the spring. From there, the Ladies Golf Association accepted donations and entered the donors in a drawing to win the quilt.
Ladies Golf Association President Mary Nelson estimated about 700 people donated, and all proceeds went to the cancer society. Nelson said the group likes donating to the cancer society because the funds stay local.
Nelson said the fundraiser collected less than last year because the group also hosted a relay tournament last year for a total of $2,000.
The group previously has donated a quilt to Moffat County High School’s Relay for Life, but this quilt raised more money because of the donations solicited by the golf association, Moon said.
“They work hard going all over. It’s an awesome effort,” Moon said.
Donation locations were set up at the pro shop and Tin Cup Grill as well as in front of supermarkets and during golf tournaments, Nelson said.
Moon said the groups usually spend October making people aware that it’s breast cancer awareness month, talking about it and getting everyone motivated to help out.
“We just wanted to make as much money for the cause as possible,” Moon said.
The Piecemakers also make lap robes for cancer patients at the infusion center at The Memorial Hospital, and the group is getting ready to begin next year’s quilt.
Nelson said quilt will be given away in a drawing at the August golf tournament. The group already is looking for participants for the tournament.
