It was a mixed start to 2023 for Moffat County girls hoops, with the Bulldogs achieving both a huge victory and a heartbreaker loss.

MoCo girls split the weekend with a 54-20 win Friday, Jan. 6, on the road in Middle Park followed by a 40-36 Saturday, Jan. 7, defeat at home to Coal Ridge.

The Dogs ran the floor from the get-go in Granby and were all but triumphant after the first eight minutes with a 27-2 first quarter, ultimately holding the Panthers to single digits in every period.

Emma Tucker led Moffat in scoring with 15 points, while fellow junior Brook Wheeler followed with 10. Senior Lizzy LeWarne kept up her rebound proficiency with 14 boards.

MoCo girls saw their first home game the next day as well as their start to the 4A Western Slope League schedule.

As the only WSL school in the CHSAA Top 10 heading into winter break, Coal Ridge girls proved they were a formidable foe indeed with a 12-5 opening quarter.

The Bulldogs kept it close and had eked ahead 27-26 to conclude the third quarter, only for the Titans to surge ahead in scoring in the final moments to close the contest.

Tucker again led in scoring with nine points to eight by LeWarne, who again earned 14 rebounds.

MoCo girls will next host Basalt Saturday, Jan. 14.
