Among many lessons, students are learning about giving and government at East Elementary School in Craig.
Bobbie McAlexander’s third-grade class at East Elementary School organized a school-wide fundraiser to give shelter pets a better Christmas. Their goal is to collect 50 items for the pets and raise $100 from a penny drive. Students started collecting supplies and money for the Moffat County Humane Society before Thanksgiving Break that will continue until Dec. 8. When school resumes on Nov. 28, donations of food, blankets, towels, treats, dog bones and pet toys can be dropped at the large collection box in the lobby of the school, as well as boxes in every classroom and in the main office.
Then McAlexander’s class will give the money raised and the items collected to representatives from the Humane Society at the school’s Dec. 18 PAWS assembly.
Her class also recently learned more about local government when Craig Mayor John Ponikvar stopped by to speak with students. The third-graders will use what they learned to govern mock cities in their classroom.
