— Steamboat Ski Area’s next leader is already very familiar with the community, the ski area and its brand.

Intrawest on Friday announced the promotion of Rob Perlman, Steamboat Ski and Resort Corp.’s vice president of sales and marketing, to president and chief operating officer.

Perlman has served in various leadership roles in the ski industry for more than 20 years.

He moved to Steamboat in 2008 with his wife, Erin, and daughters Amanda and Morgan.

“It’s a huge honor, and I’m incredibly excited to continue the great results we’ve been able to achieve over the years,” Perlman said after his promotion was announced.

Perlman succeeds Chris Diamond, who is retiring at the end of this month after a 15-year career with Ski Corp.

In a news release, Intrawest COO Sky Foulkes said Perlman’s “business acumen, developed during decades in the ski and travel sectors, combined with his community involvement and resort leadership, is perfectly suited for his new expanded role at Steamboat.”

Perlman assumes his new leadership role July 1.

Perlman said after news of the promotion got out, he quickly started getting phone calls, emails and text messages from supporters.

“Everyone is really excited,” Perlman said.

In promoting Perlman, Intrawest has selected a longtime ski industry veteran who is intimately familiar with the workings of the ski area here.

Before working for Intrawest, Perlman was the president and CEO of Colorado Ski Country USA. He has also held various leadership roles at ski resorts in Colorado and California.

“My experience here sets me up very well to continue the great results Steamboat has achieved over the last few years into the future,” Perlman said. “We just came off a great season financially and in terms of guest service and employee satisfaction. My goal is to continue to be a great community partner and continuing the great results we just finished up with this season.”

Perlman takes the leadership role here at a time of great competition between Rocky Mountain ski areas.

Vail Resorts is moving ahead with tens of millions of dollars worth of improvements at Park City Mountain Resort ahead of the 2015-16 ski season.

Steamboat itself has also seen some significant improvements and upgrades in the last two years, including the addition of night skiing and the construction of the Four Points Lodge.

Asked what future opportunities he saw for Steamboat, Perlman said the ski area can build on the reputation it already has established.

“Steamboat has always been an iconic brand,” Perlman said. “It’s incredibly well recognized for great guest service, for great family programs and the fantastic community we’re a part of, and I think that’s what differentiates us from our competitors. We’ll stay true to that going forward. We’ll be Steamboat rather than somewhere we’re not.”
