People shouldn’t deny babies a healthy start for political reasons

To the Editor:

We’ve all seen ads encouraging women to give their babies a healthy start by getting pre-natal care. Many life-long problems can be averted by simple medical care in the earliest stages of life. Thank goodness the Bush administration included unborn children in the State Children’s Health Insurance Program, a federal program to provide medical care for poor children. It is common sense that children who need it, and can benefit perhaps the most, should be covered.

Not only is this the compassionate and logical thing to do (one wonders why anyone would exclude them to begin with), but fiscally sound. Giving babies proper care while developing in their mother will save their families and the taxpayers from covering more serious medical problems later. Now, all that’s left is for our state officials to agree to cover the babies in our states. It is unconscionable to think they would do otherwise.

Pro-abortionists are screaming that the Bush administration has recognized and included unborn children in a federal program to care for poor children (the State Children’s Health Insurance Programs, SCHIP).

They would deny “wanted” children a healthy start in life rather than allow babies to be recognized as human beings.

I hope you will help support this program by bringing the public’s attention to the need for our legislators to vote positively on this issue. It’s time to admit that we’ve allowed the special interest groups to coerce us for too long, and to do what is right.

Sincerely,

Larry Spalding,

Maybell
